Back to School Hair Defense

We are fully into the school routine for this new year, and our alarms are set to the perfect time to allow us every last second of sleep. My two older girls love school, so it is a very exciting time in our house. Except for those dreaded letters that we get home at least 5 times each school year letting us know about the pesky little critters that like to hitch a ride in your hair. I don't know why head hitch hikers are such a big deal at our school, but from what my friends tell me, we are not alone. As you're thinking about all that crawly awesomeness and possibly finding yourself scratching your scalp, know that I have three daughters at home and two have very long hair. We already got it THREE times in one school year before finding Young Living and destroyed our hair getting rid of them the traditional way with harsh chemicals. I did not want to go through that ever again. Have no fear, our hair did eventually recover.
Once the articles about super head critters started hitting the interwebs, I panicked! They are becoming resistant to medications and treatments, and it may already be in my state?! Gross! I knew I had to find something to help us not be the reason a letter went home to the rest of the class about treatment-resistant critters. Who has time for that?
Being a more natural family, I hit the stores to see what I could find. I saw a repellent on the shelves and thought it had a lot of un-pronounceable ingredients. To my amazement though, there were several essential oils listed in the ingredients. And, I had some of them at home already. I left the store smiling because my Young Living oils rescued my family again. We already had a little spray bottle we used to help detangle my four-year old's curls each morning which had lavender and copiaba in it.

At first, I simply added a little tea tree oil to the mix. I later learned that rosemary essential oil may be helpful as well (and was in that other stuff), so I ordered that oil and added it in the spray later. A little spritz before they went out the door in the morning - and we didn't have any more issues for two years. At that point, I got a little lazy about the spritzing, and we saw the little buggers in our house again. I was able to use the oils to get rid of that problem too, but that is a tale for another day. You can make some hair defender for your home below. Let us know how it turns out for you!

Things you need:
2 ounce spray bottle
pinch of epsom salt
water - I use distilled or filtered to avoid the chlorine and minerals
5 drops Young Living lavender essential oil
5 drops Young Living tea tree essential oil
5 drops Young Living copiaba essential oil (optional)
5 drops Young Living rosemary essential oil (optional)
Head to spritz :)
What to do:
1. Place a pinch of epsom salts in your 2 ounce spray bottle.
2. Drop the oils into the spray bottle
3. Fill remainder of bottle with water
4. Place the cap on the spray bottle and label bottle if desired
5. Shake to distribute oils throughout the bottle and spray over hair (be sure to do it each school day)
